BUSINESS CRIME PREVENTION

Crime Prevention is a pattern of attitudes and behaviors directed both at reducing the threat of crime and enhancing the sense of safety and security, to positively influence the quality of life in our society, and to help develop environments where crime cannot flourish.

Crime prevention means working in partnership, rather than in isolation, with concerned citizens to address ways to prevent crime. It means law enforcement working with communities, businesses, and service organizations to develop action plans, where necessary, to prevent or reduce crime and other problems.

There have been numerous inquiries on this website about Business Watch.  We thank the  Community Services Bureau of the Kent County Sheriff's Department in Michigan for making this information available.

KENT COUNTY BUSINESS WATCH

The Kent County Sheriff's Department recently launched a Business Watch program in the north end of the county. The community, with numerous Neighborhood Watches in the residential area is familiar with such programs,  Community policing officer Bill Whiting canvassed a segment of the business district to see if business owners were interested in organizing such an association and received  commitment   from 100% of the merchants
The first meeting was called and was very well attended.  Attendees received basic training on how to identity and report suspicious activity.  Businesses were registered.  Instead of a calling tree, merchants will be notified about known criminal activity via a fax generated at the sheriff's department.  Future training meetings are planned.  More business watches are planned for other parts of the county in an effort to reduce crime county wide.
